Keeping Your Child Comfortable
Dental anxiety is common for many children. Using minimal sedation can lower the chance that your child will have a negative experience during their procedure.
We won’t put children to sleep. Our practice only uses minimal conscious sedation methods (nitrous oxide commonly known as laughing gas). If you’re interested in learning more about our sedation process or have any questions before your child’s appointment, give us a call.
Why Sedation?
During your child’s dental procedures, sedation is another tool that can help your child to relax and stay comfortable while our team is providing care. We won’t put your child to sleep, avoiding the potential complications associated with general anesthesia.
Dr. Paul Andrews and Dr. Richard Andrews may use minimal sedation methods including nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to keep your child comfortable. Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a nose mask. It only takes a few minutes to begin to take effect and will help your child stay relaxed, while still awake, throughout the procedure. It will be completely gone from your child’s body before leaving the office.
Before & After Care
To help your child feel comfortable before, during, and after being sedated, there are things you can do as a parent.
Before Sedation
Before your child arrives at their appointment, following these tips can help them have a more enjoyable experience:
- Avoid eating 2 hours before the appointment
- Dress in comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
- Tell us about any prescription or over-the-counter medications your child is taking
- Let them bring one of their favourite toys to help them feel comfortable
