What Do Tweens & Teens Need to Know About Their Teeth?

Now that your child is growing up, they’re becoming responsible for their dental care at home. However, as a parent, it’s important you’re still involved to make sure they’re brushing and flossing properly, and telling you about any oral health symptoms, like bleeding while brushing, which can be a sign of gum disease.

Between the ages of 12–19, it’s estimated 59% of Canadian children have had or currently have at least one cavity. During these ages, it’s important your child visits us for an exam and cleaning every 6 months.

These appointments are opportunities for our team to catch cavities or other issues early and discuss treatment options.

We may discuss the benefits of orthodontic treatment for your child to maintain a pleasing smile.

How We Can Help

Exams & Cleanings

We recommend that your child comes in for a dental exam and cleaning at least every 6–9 months. The cleaning helps reduce plaque and tartar buildup that may have occurred since their last visit. The exam is our opportunity to ensure your child is receiving the oral health care they need.

Restorative Dental Care

If your child has or had cavities or a dental emergency, we will discuss and propose appropriate evidence-based restorative dental care or root canal options to address the problem. Your concerns and opinions will be valued as we develop a plan together in the best interest of your child.

Orthodontics

Our team will work with you and your child to determine what orthodontic treatment, if any, is best for them.
